While a war is almost certainly one of the last things anybody would want to experience, the fact is that, even in my lifetime, the world has been a witness to several wars. In school, we learned about other wars and, perhaps, got a feeling for how people during those times survived.
Even today, there are wars of various levels raging in different parts of the world. Modern news gathering and transmission services bring the images right into our living rooms. It seems odd that, with so many of us realizing the inhumanity of war that they can still happen...but they do.
It has been said that, in order to be prepared for peace, you have to be prepared to go to war. No matter what your country, or your religion, or your politics, there seems that there is always some group willing to wreak havoc upon you and your loved ones.
Often, even if the civilian population is not directly decimated or destroyed by war, they die due to lack of emergency preparation for war. Emergency preparation is not something which can be started once the emergency happens, but must be done in advance. That's why it is called "preparation".
Once you are prepared, no matter how rapidly peace may change to war, you will have the supplies you need to take care of yourself and your family.
Similar to preparation for natural disasters, emergency preparation for war will involve stocking up on supplies of emergency food and water. There will be a need for first aid supplies, pots and pans, and some sort of back up cooking apparatus. You will need to have means of starting fires for light, heat, and cooking, and you will need to be able to provide light to see by at night.
The things you will need can be as complicated as chemical protective gear, and as simple as bandanas to cover your mouth, bind wounds, or for many other uses.
Wherever you live, the government has certainly made at least some steps towards emergency preparation. They may have set aside places to go in the event of a war or other emergency. It is important to make sure that, as part of your emergency preparation for war, that you make yourself aware of their plans and the facilities that might be available to you and your loved ones in the event of disaster.
Obviously, in preparation for war, the government will have armed itself and set up plans and equipment for defense, transportation, and water purification. It will have prepared an emergency food supply and medical supplies. You need to also think about these things for yourself, because the government's plans might not be able to help you.
It is in your best interests to make plans for yourself and your loved ones. You need emergency food supplies, a good quality first aid kit, stored water and emergency water purification methods. You will need a way of preparing food, heating and lighting your living area. You will need to prepare a backup means of transportation and link up with your neighbors, as there is strength in numbers.
In preparation for war, the government may provide various forms of training to the citizens. Take advantage of any of these opportunities. However, you may want to find training on survival and even self-defense. In the event of war, knowledge of the martial arts may help you not only protect yourself, but keep you healthy and focused.
When it comes to emergency preparation for war, it's a good idea to get whatever you can in the way of training, guidance, and supplies from the government. After all, you are one small speck in the equation, and the government will have a lot more resources than you will no matter how good your personal emergency preparation efforts have been.
Like everything else, war has become more technologically advanced in this era than it has ever been before. While we, the citizens, may have computers and cell phones, in the event of a war, only the government may have access to those services. However, for decades, amateur radio operators (hams) have been able to maintain contact during emergencies, and, it might behoove you to learn how to operate an amateur radio, and get the equipment to operate in a limited manner at least.
In fact, in the event of any disaster, natural or man-made, you may find that being able to go back to a less technologcial time may be a valuable part of your emergency preparation plan. Remember also, that when your are doing emergency preparation for war, you are also, at least in part, getting ready for survival in almost any other survival situation.
